Petey’s Playground is a foster-based pet rescue serving seniors in the Yarnell-Peeples Valley area – Congress, North Ranch, Yarnell, Peeples Valley, Kirkland, Wilhoit, Skull Valley, and the rural areas in between.
In 2012 we launched Petey’s Playground with a goal of helping seniors preserve their relationships with their pets.
We focused on providing temporary care or housing for pets whose owners had a medical emergency. But it turns out that we are doing much more. We are improving the quality of life for seniors and their pets through placement, training, and assessment.
We help seniors who want a pet to find the appropriate companion animal for them.
We address behavioral issues that affect the relationship between people
and their pets. And we continue to provide short-term care in medical emergencies, including placement of pets in new homes if the owner’s health will not allow him or her to return to the previous living situation.
As always, there is no charge for our services.
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization
financed by private donations.
We want to help animals – and you.
That’s our mission and we wanted to share it with you.

Kim Lytle is the founder and director of Petey’s Playground.
She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Welfare from the University of Minnesota. She worked with seniors and was a Social Service Director in an adult care facility in Minneapolis early in her career. In 2000 she started volunteering at Spokane County Regional Animals Protective Services in Spokane, Washington, where she learned the inside culture of networking, training and adopting dogs. She started and ran the FIDO program (Federal Inmate Dog Opportunities) where Federal female inmates were taught to obedience train shelter dogs and prepare them for adoption. Forty dogs had been trained and adopted by the time Kim retired. When she moved to Arizona she worked in a local shelter as a behavior assessor for dogs for two years. When the need for Petey's playground was identified she and her dedicated volunteers obtained their 501(c)(3) certification, and the rest is history!
